Sorry, I need to vent a bit.
As some of you know I work for my father. Part of the store has clothing - jacket, t-shirts, coveralls, that sort of thing. He's been in business sixty years and it's always been kind of a local joke about how messy and cluttered the place is. About two years ago the girl I worked with - Caroline - spent about a week cleaning out crap and reorganizing everything so that you could actually see the floor and what we were trying to sell. Since then I've done a few minor changes, but that's it.
Caroline left a year ago last January. Dad hired Rose around the end of last September. A few months ago she moved about ten or twelve jackets around and dusted off the others. When people comment on how clean everything looks - usually people who haven't been in the store in at least a year - she's taken full credit for it. I haven't said anything, because Caroline's not there, and I don't care.
Today, my oldest brother came in and asked who cleaned everything up. I told him that Caroline has started it. Then I got interrupted. After my brother left and we were alone Rose told me that she couldn't believe that I would give Caroline the credit since Caroline had been gone over a year.
I told her that I wasn't taking anything away from what she'd done, she'd done a good job, but if she'd seen what it looked like before - which is what HE was comparing it to - she would understand. Caroline did 95% of the work and I had to give her credit for it.
Rose said that she might as well stop dusting, etc then since she wasn't going to get the credit for it and that Caroline had done the books but not the other. Or at the most Caroline had done one side and she did all of the other.
Considering that I was there for ALL of it....I consider that bullshit. Once again I told her that if she had seen what it looked like before she would understand my point.
Then she told me that she hadn't heard any comments about how clean it was until after she'd done her little bit of rearranging. I had to tell her no, we've heard it for quite awhile. I didn't want to tell her that what we've heard recently was nothing compared to what we heard right after Caroline did the work and the people who've commented recently haven't been in since the original work was done. I didn't think it was necessary to throw that in her face.
She still thinks that I should have given her the credit, but I don't feel right giving her credit for work that was done a year before she even worked there! In fact, I've done more work in the last year on that area than she has. I've praised her on the work she's done -as has my father - but I'm not prepared to give her the credit, with someone like my brother, for work she didn't do.
Am I wrong? BTW, we're talking about a 52 year old woman here, not a young girl just starting in the work world.
