Greenwich resident and Grammy- and Emmy-nominated musician, music director, singer/songwriter, arranger, and record producer Rob Mathes is busy coordinating the musical line-up for this weekend’s pre-inaugural “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial” concert scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 18, in Washington, D.C., that is the opening celebration of the 56th Presidential Inaugural.
Mr. Mathes will musically direct and arrange the show, with scheduled performers who’ll include Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Jon BonJovi, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder, with additional performers possible. The concert’s executive producer is George Stevens, Jr. (The Kennedy Center Honors); it is produced by Don Mischer (Olympic Ceremonies), and directed by Michael Stevens (The American Film Institute Salutes) and is a production of The Stevens Company in association with Don Mischer Productions.
“It is so exciting to be a part of history with this inaugural concert for Barack Obama,” said Mr. Mathes, who has been working around the clock to prepare for the concert. “I have never ever in my life experienced anything like this before — I’m fielding tons of e-mails a day, on the phone with artists from Usher to James Taylor to Garth Brooks, and in the next couple days, have to finish writing full orchestra charts, one for Beyonce and one for Josh Groban; choral charts, one for Springsteen and others; rhythm charts for BonJovi, Mary J, and participating in conference calls to get all of the details down. It is great and I’m enjoying every minute of it!”
The show will be broadcast on HBO on Sunday, Jan. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. (ET/PT). HBO will broadcast the show on open access, which means those with cable or satellite will be able to see it for free.
Mr. Mathes has directed the Kennedy Center Honors, for which he has been nominated twice for an Emmy (2008 was his sixth year as music director for the awards show); produced the top five Panic At The Disco album “Pretty. Odd,” and ia currently starting to produce their next record; he’s written classical commissions for The Nashville Symphony, and Leonard Slatkin; and has done writing, arrranging, and producing for a wide variety of other musicians. He is currently working on new music for the upcoming Billy Bob Thornton film, "Manure," and he is producing several tracks of Latin music for the next Vanessa Williams record on Concord Records.
Rob Mathess is well known in the Fairfield-Westchester for his charity benefit Christmas concerts, which began in Greenwich and in recent years have been produced at Purchase College’s Performing Arts Center.
